A new year is an opportunity for a fresh start for everyone. It’s been great learning about the Nueva Luz Foundation’s TIFT program – through this program, tweens are offered a chance to better themselves and help prevent further problems in the future. Right now, we’re looking forward to the new year, and we’re preparing to set a goal for ourselves. This brought me to think about how important it is for youth to start wanting to set goals as well.
“The new year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written. We can help write that story, by setting goals”, Melody Beattle.
Setting realistic goals is idealistic, setting smaller goals is what prepares you to be successful. We must remember that our youth are already busy with school, sports, clubs and just extracurricular activities in general; so why set yourself up with an impractical goal? Set easy, attainable goals so as to not get discouraged.
The lack of self-esteem and confidence is of concern these days. When dealing with low self-esteem or confidence it can potentially lead to; depression, suicidal thoughts, eating disorders or bullying. To help combat this problem from increasing in society, set goals you can be proud of! Be an example for others! This shouldn’t be only something our younger teens are doing, older teens and adults should do this too. Everyone in the community should want to set goals for themselves. Our youth look up to those who are older than them, so if you are someone who has a younger sibling, cousin, friend, anyone that you feel might be looking up to you… take the initiative and start being that strong role model you know you can be.
So, take advantage of this new year, with a fresh start, you can change who you are to a better you. Set goals for this year, remember the goal doesn’t have to be drastic or extravagant. It only takes one small thing to help change a person’s life. Here are examples of easy, attainable goals you can choose from; you could spend more time outside, take a break from technology, you make a goal to read at least two books a month, or just to make sure you stay on top of all your school work, make sure you complete everything and go to school every day.
